Poreč is a town on the west cost of Istria. It was inhabited even in the pre-historical times, from 4000 - 1800 BC. It is situated on a peninsula and is on the south side protected by little islands. The most known of these is St. Nicholas with stone and sand beaches, where the Polesini marquise built his castle.

Thanks to its natural harbor and settlement in the Roman times, Poreč was a fortified Roman base Colonia Julia Parentium. In the Antique period, Parentium develops into a town and it’s urban structure develops with two main streets: Decumanus and Cardo.

The Euphrasie basilica originates from the same period and is the best known cultural sight of the town. The Euphrasie basilica is the third church built on the same spot. In the 5th century a very big basilica called the “Pre – Euphrasie” was built and richly decorated with mosaics in the Byzantine style. It was finished by the bishop Euphrasie in the 6th century. For it’s exceptional cultural value this basilica is on the UNESCO’s list of World’s Cultural Heritage.

In the Romanic and Gothic period a great number of valuable monuments and buildings were built. The Romanesque houses down the Decumanus and Cardo are of special value and interest. The only partially preserved religious site from this period is the Franciscan church that later on was the home of Istrian parliament. Today it hosts the local museum of Istria.

A rich cultural heritage is one of the reasons for a sudden tourist development of Poreč in the 70’s of the 19th century. The very beginnings of Poreč tourism are linked to the year 1845 when Pietro Kandler wrote the first guide through the city. A more significant upturn of tourism in Poreč is recorded in the 50’s of the last century when a considerable number of tourist resorts, camps, hotels and sport centers was built. This also includes an entire tourist town of Červar Porat.

A mild Mediterranean climate, natural beauties, cultural – historical monuments, care of the town’s cleanness and image, renewed hotels and tourist complexes draw a great number of international guests. Throughout the year Poreč holds many manifestations, concerts and local festivities.
